hi first news post here

so it says i'm a carpenter in my bio, but what does it actually mean? well it means i draw once a month and the rest of my time goes to something like making furniture or, as of recently, to making model ships

For the better part of three months i've been making "Pequod" from "Moby Dick" and "Thousand Sunny" from one piece. The "Pequod" is still in the research phase of the project, but i've been making really good progress with "Sunny".

Okay first things first, i apologize in advance for the awful quality of the photos. I am an idiot so i don't take WIP pictures, sorry

how it started:

With nothing but Oda's sketches for reference i made the first blueprint draft. it's roughly the size that i needed it to be, but has all the flaws in the world. With this schematic there wouldn't be enough space for floors or the deck connecting them, so back to the drawing i went. It took me three tries but i finally managed to get a somewhat good result:

It ended up being slightly bigger then originally planned, but i was prepared for this. No big deal!

Oh but wait don't you need another view to understand how it looks in 3D? Yes i do, i'm glad you asked, because i forgot to do that and looked really dumb in front of my teacher. So back to drawing i went and several hours later prodused this:

cool huh? not really there are a ton of mistakes again, but at this point i was too lazy and tired for a re-do. This ended up to be the final version regardless.

And now the fun part started: working with wood! Of course being the idiot that i am, i didn't take any pictutes until i started shaping the round parts of the hull. And even then i only took a short video for a friend without any details really visible. You'll have to trust me that i really made it i guess.

Ahh you can really taste the awful quality in these!

So with this rough step done it was time for a planer! My favourite tool to date i must say, so satisfying, so cool. And after two or three days of non-stop planing it was time to get out my trusty chisel to do the detailing. After half a day i eventually got it to look something like this:

Oh no hand reveal! Anyway.. Its still super messy but the main parts are there and that's the only thing that matters really.

That's how it's going, next step will be cutting off the exsess wood on the top, carving out the insides so it doesn't weigh like a truck and adding floors. I imagine the deck and the floors will give me the most grief apart from the figurehead being an absolute nightmare. We'll see when we get to it!

So there's that! I'll make a few updates here and there on what i'm doing and how the project progresses. I've also set a deadline for myself so i can showcase my ship in an exhibition. Planning it to be done before the beginning of march, god help me.
